BHRT refers to the therapeutic use of hormones that are identical in every way to hormones produced naturally in your body. One common source of confusion is that the term “bioidentical” hormone implies that it is a “natural” hormone. Like pharmaceutical hormones, all bioidentical hormones are created synthetically from vegetable products in a chemical process that is not “natural.”
However, by the end of the process, hormones are produced that are identical on a molecular basis to their human counterparts and therefore are better understood as ‘human identical.’ Unfortunately, the scientific term “bioidentical” is the one used to describe this new horizon in medicine.
Unlike bioidentical hormones, pharmaceutical hormones have been molecularly altered from their human prototypes so that they can be patented and sold as a synthetic substance. It is these differences that appear to have created some of the problems associated with hormone therapy in the past. All hormone therapy, whether pharmaceutical or bio-identical, carries risks and must be monitored closely.
